العمل الذي أقدمه هنا هو القسم الخاص بتاريخ اليمن من كتاب "كنز الأخبار في معرفة السير والأخبار" للمؤرخ "عماد الدين إدريس بن علي بن عبد الله الحمزي" ويعد هذا القسم كتاباً داخل كتابه الأم الذي يصفه المؤرخون بأنه مصنف شامل للتاريخ الإسلامي حتى قبيل وفاة المؤلف المؤرخ عماد الدين (في ربيع الآخر عام 714هـ) بعام واحد، ويحوي هذا القسم اليمني تاريخ اليمن منذ عهد رسول الله "صلى الله عليه وسلم" حتى شهر صفر عام 714 هــ، ولذلك أسميناه "تاريخ اليمن" وربطناه بعنوان الكتاب الأم.
لكن القيام بهذا العمل لم يكن على الرغم مما فيه من متعة وفائدة، بالأمر البسيط أو الهين، فلكي نسير على القراء متابعة الأحداث الواردة فيه جغرافياً، وجدنا لزاماً علينا ضرورة تحديد وتعريف المواقع الجغرافية العديدة للأحداث، وهذا ألزامنا بالرجوع إلى المصادر الجغرافية باليمن، كذلك لكي نيسر على القراء متابعة الأحداث تاريخياً كان لزاماً علينا تعريف الأعلام التي وردت في الكتاب.
