ابن السراج محمد بن سحلل النحوي البغدادي أحد العلماء الأفذاذ الذين انتهى إليه علم العربية وقد أجمع الكثيرون على فضله وغزارة علمه. تتلمذ على المبرد وكان مشاركاً في كثير من العلوم. وأثنى العلماء على مؤلفاته في القراءات والنحو واللغة والأدب والحظ. وكتاب الأصول في النحو يشمل النحو والصرف، عنى به النحاة وقد جمع فيه أبواب النحو والصرف وأخذ مسائل سيبويه. ورتبها أحسن ترتيب واختصر فيه أصول العربية وجمع مقاييسها ونظر في دقائق سيبويه.
وقد بدت في هذا الكتاب منهجية ابن السراج فبوّب كتابه تبويباً يشبه كتاب سيبويه، فبدأ بموضوعات الأسماء ثم المنصوبات والمجرورات وانتقل بعد ذلك إلى التوابع كالنعت والتوكيد وعطف النسق وعطف البيان، والعطف بالحروف. ثم تطرّق إلى نواصب الأفعال وجوازمها. وأضاف على ذلك باب التقديم والتأخير وباب الإخبار بالذي وبالألف واللام ثم انتهى إلى مسائل الصرف. وقد بذل المحقق في تحقيق الكتاب جهداً كبيراً إذ تتبع أصوله وكان يلجأ عن اقتضاء الحاجة إلى كتاب سيبويه لأن كثيراً من نصوص الأصول منقولة من كتاب سيبويه. وحافظ على النص ولم يتدخل فيه إلا بالقدر الذي يفي بمراد المؤلف، وأشار إلى المواضيع التي أعمل فيها تقويماً أو حذفاً أو إضافة. وقد دأب المحقق على تقويم بعض الجمل غير المستقيمة التي وردت في النص الأصلي وأشار إلى ذلك في الحاشية. وترجم للأعلام الذي وردت أسماؤهم وخرج الشواهد من الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث النبوية، وتحقق من الأمثال، وشواهد الشعر. كما لم ينسَ أن يشرح المفردات الغريبة التي وردت في المخطوط شرحاً لغوياً موجزاً.
