جاء اختيار موضوع الحياة العلمية والثقافية في غر ناطة في عصر بني الأحمر (629 –897 هـ /1232- 1492م) نتيجة لعدم وجود دراسة تفصيلية متكاملة في هذا المجال حيث أن ما تطرق إليه بعض الباحثين لا يتعدى بضع صفحات ، ولأن بعض الكتب قد ركزت على الجانب السياسي في تاريخ مملكة غر ناطة بينما تطرقت إلى الجانب الثقافي بصورة مختصرة. كما أن البعض الآخر عالج الجانب الثقافي في تاريخ مملكة غر ناطة ، ولكن من خلال شخصية بعينها.
تكتسب الحياة العلمية والثقافية في غر ناطة أهميتها من الثراء العلمي والثقافي الواضح الناتج عن جهود العديد من العلماء والأدباء والشعراء الذين ساهموا في إغناء الحياة العلمية والثقافية بمؤلفات قيمة وغزيرة ملأت المصادر، إلى درجة أن من يقف على هذا الكم الهائل من التراث العلمي والثقافي الغرناطي لا يمكن إلا أن يشعـــر بالانبهار وبإكبار تلك المجهودات القيمة في نفس الوقت. إضافة إلى أن مساهمات علماء تلك الفترة لم تقتصر على البحث والتأليف بل شملت تدريس العلوم والآداب المختلفة في مدارس غر ناطة ومساجدها ، وبذلك كان لهم أيضاً فضل كبير على مجموعة من مشاهير علماء العرب المسلمين ذوي المكانة المرموقة التي حفظها لهم التاريخ على مر العصور ، والذين تتلمذوا على أيديهم.
