لا شك أن طلب العلم قد جاء في فضله نصوص كثيرة من القرآن والسنة، واستحضارها مهم جداً لشحذ الهمم على طلب العلم. وطلب العلم له آدابه، والتزام ذلك يقوم سلوك طالب العلم مع شيخه وأقرانه، ويختصر له الطريق في الطلب، ويبصره بالأهم فالأهم، ويرشده إلى طريق الراسخين الذين سبقوه في الطلب من كبار العلماء. ومن الآداب ما يؤخذ بقراءة الكتب المصنفة في آداب الطلب، ومنها ما يؤخذ من مجالسة العلماء، وكما قال مهنا-تلميذ الإمام أحمد-: "صحبت أبا عبد الله فتعلمت منه العلم والأدب".
وحاجة طالب العلم للأدب قبل الشروع في الطلب مهمة جداً، لذلك استفاضت وصايا الأئمة في الأمر بذلك. فهذا الإمام مالك رحمه الله قال لفتى من قريش: "يا ابن أخي تعلم الأدب قبل أن تتعلم العلم".
وقال أبو بكر الآجري رحمه الله: "لهذا العالم صفات وأحوال شتى ومقامات لا بد له من استعمالها، فهو مستعمل في كل حال ما يجب عليه فله صفة في طلبه العلم وكيف يطلبه، وله صفة في كثرة العلم إذا كثر عنده ما الذي يجب عليه فيه فيلزمه نفسه، وله صفة إذا جالس العلماء كيف يجالسهم، وله صفة إذا تعلم من العلماء كيف يتعلم، وله صفة كيف يعلم غيره، وله صفة إذا ناظر في العلم يناظر، وله صفة إذا أفتى الناس كيف يفتي، وله صفة كيف يجالس الأمراء إذا ابتلى بمجالستهم، ومن يستحق أن يجالسه ومن لا يستحق، وله صفة كيف يعبد الله عز وجل فيما بينه وبينه، قد أعد لكل حق يلزمه ما يقويه على القيام به، وقد أعد لكل نازلة ما بسلم به من شرها في دينه، عالم بما يجتلب به الطاعات، عالم بما يدفع به البليات، قد اعتقد الأخلاق السنية، واعتزل الأخلاق الدنية".
وبين طيات هذا الكتاب نبذ في آداب تحمل العلم وأداه ومن عناوينها نذكر: الإخلاص لله عز وجل، التفرغ لطلب العلم، حسن فهم مخارج الكلام، الاعتناء بالحفظ، لزوم الكتاب والسنة، أخذ العلم بالمشافهة، تنقيح الخلاف لا مجرد حكايته، مراعاة حقوق زملاء الطلب، الحذر من حسد الأقران، كتمان بعض العلم للمصالحة الدعاء بالعلم النافع والزيادة منه التغفل في الانتصار في مسائل الخلاف الكبار...
