كان إنهيار الإتحاد السوفياتي مدوياً، واعتقد العالم أن روسيا الجسم الرئيس للإتحاد السوفياتي قد انهارت وخرجت من الساحة، وانبرى سياسيون كُثر، وبالأخص من ساسة الغرب إلى شطب اسم روسيا من قائمة الدول العظمى، والتقليل من قدرتها ودينامكية وآفاق تطورها، ولم يطل الوقت حتى ظهركم كم كان هؤلاء قصيري النظر، إذ سرعان ما ثَبُتَ أن لكل جواد كبوة، ليس إلا.
في هذا الكتاب إستعراض لمرحلة السقوط وما رافقها من فوضى إن من الداخل أو في الخارج الذي راح خلالها ينمو ويتعاظم التكالب على تقاسم الغنيمة، ومن ثم كيف بدأت عملية الوقوف والتوازن والإنطلاق.
ويقدم الكتاب صورة جاذبة عما دار في الكواليس لإنتقال السلطة من بوريس يلتسين إلى بوتين، والشيء الآخر والمهم هو أن هذا الكتاب يحاول إستقراء مستقبل روسيا خلال المرحلة القادمة ويطرح مسألة الخلافة في روسيا بعد بوتين من شتى جوانبها، ويستعرض سيناريوهات عدة لتطور الأحداث على هذا الصعيد.
