يتناول المؤلف البريطاني في كتابه هذا دراسة المذاهب الاقتصادية والسوسيولوجية والواقعية الجديدة، والهدف الذي ابتغاه من هذه الدراسة هو تقديم فكرة عامة عن فلسفة القانون التي تقوم على دراسة القانون كظاهرة اجتماعية، تتصل بالظواهر السياسية والاقتصادية والتاريخية والدينية والأخلاقية، وغيرها من الظواهر، وتحقيقا للموضوعية في البحث قسم المؤلف كتابه إلى ثلاث أقسام تناولت المواضيع التالية: القسم الأول: المدارس الاقتصادية، الفترة ما بين ماركس إلى 1920 الفترة ما بين 1921-1937، الفترة ما بين 1938 حتى الوقت الحاضر، القسم الثاني: المدارس السوسيولوجية الأصول الاجتماعية للقوانين والنظم القانونية، اثر القوانين على المجتمع، وظيفة القوانين في المجتمع المعيار الاجتماعي لصحة القانون الجماعات والمؤسسات، القسم الثالث: تناول فيه المؤلف الواقعية الجديدة، فلاسفة الواقعية في أميركا، الواقعيون الاسكندناويون، القانون الطبيعي، النظريات الحديثة.
