في اليوم الرابع والعشرون من فبراير من عام ألف وثمانماية وخمسة عشرة ترسو سفينة "فرعون" القادمة من ميناء "مرسيليا" قادمة من ميناء "أزمير" بـ "تركيا" ليخرج نائب القبطان إدمون دانيس وبيده رسالة إلى صاحب السفينة ذات أهمية.
تتحدث الرواية عن شاب اتهم زوراً بأنه من الموالين لسياسة نابليون بونابرت وأنه يريد إطاحة الملك الجديد ليعود نابليون إلى الحكم. هذه التهمة جعلته يقضي فترة من الزمن في سجن يقع على إحدى الجزر النائية في المحيط، وجعلته أيضاً يخلق وعده لخطيبته مرسيدس بالزواج منها. ولكن لماذا اتهم بالتحريض؟ وما مضمون الرسالة التي حملها إلى رجل في جزيرة ألبا؟ هذا ما سيطالعه القارئ في هذه الرواية التي تعد من أجمل ما كتب الكسندر ديماس في الانتقام. إذ أن "دانيس" هذا سيصبح قبطاناً لعظم باخرة تجارية الأمر الذي يجسده عليه أحد أصدقاؤه الذي يشي به فيكون السجن من نصيبه وبعد ذهابه إلى السجن في تلك الجزيرة النائية تحصل له مفاجآت تقوده إلى الغنى ويعود إلى أهله بعد طول غياب.
