يعد كتاب "النوادر السلطانية والمحاسن اليوسفية" لـ بهاء الدين يوسف بن رافع، الشهير "بابن شداد" أهم مصدر للتاريخ لحياة السلطان صلاح الدين وأحوال، خلال المرحلة الأخيرة من حياته، بعيد فتح القدس وحتى وفاته، بين عامي 584-589هت. وهو بذلك يكمل المصادر التي سبقته، كتاريخ ابن الأثير ومؤلفات الأصفهاني وغيرهما..
وبالتالي يمثل هذا الكتاب نموذجاً فريداً من كتب التراجم والسير، ورغم أن مؤلفه لم يكن مؤرخاً، فقد أتحف القارئ بنص رائع لا يجد له مثيلاً في باقي مصادر التراث العربي المكتوب، كتبه عما شاهده بعينه وخبره بنفسه وتفاعل بأحداثه، لا بل وشارك في هذه الأحداث ونال شرف الجهاد والقتال في صفوف قوات السلطان الناصر.
وفي هذا الكتاب يلمح القارئ مواقف إنسانية صدرت عن السلطان العملاق، المتناهي في كرمه وإنسانيته وفروسيته، رصدها ابن شداد وروى للقارئ أخبارها وأخبار المعارك والفتوحات الخالدة، التي نال الناصر شرف القيام بها، فارتبط اسمه في تراثنا بالجهاد والتحرير والإخلاص.
تبقى سيرة البطل الخالد صلاح الدين الأيوبي وجهاده وحروبه مع الصليبيين وانتصاره الأكبر في حطين وفتحه القدس تبقى واحدة من انصع صفحات تاريخنا العربي الإسلامي الوضاء في هذا الكتاب النوادر السلطانية والمحاسن اليوسفية ينقل لنا المؤلف بهاء الدين ابن شداد صوره حيه ورواية مباشرة عن حياه بطلنا الكبير وأعماله وبطولاته ويصور لنا كشاهد عيان ثبت صادق. مشاهد مؤثرة وعبراً بليغة عن المزايا العظيمة التي تحلى بها السلطان الناصر صلاح الدين الأيوبي حتى احترامه الأعداء بله الأصدقاء فارتفع اسم صلاح الدين عالياً ليقترن بأمجاد جهاده وليقترن بالقدس الشريف وليغدو صاحبه -بكل جداره-واحداً من اعظم الشخصيات التي أنجبتها أمتنا العربية الإسلامية.
