وإذا كان الإرشاد النفسي يهدف إلى مساعدة الفرد على فهم نفسه والتعبير عن مشاعره وأحاسيسه وأفكاره الداخليَّة وفهم كيفيَّة تأثيرها على سلوكه (وربما كيفيَّة تسبيبها للمشكلة التي يُعاني منها)، فإن الإرشاد النفس ـ اجتماعي من خلال قيام المُرْشِد بدوره التوجيهي والتوعوي يهدف إلى معاونة الفرد على فهم تأثير المجتمع والثقافة المحيطة به على وجود مشكلته وذلك من خلال مساعدته على إدراك كيفيَّة تأثير أسلوب التفاعل والتواصل والتخاطب بين الأفراد على وجود المشكلة وكذلك تأثير اتجاهات الآخرين نحوه وأقوالهم وأفعالهم ومشاعرهم على تعزيزها أو حلها.
أما الهدف العام للإرشاد النفس ـ اجتماعي في البيئة العائليَّة، فهو محاولة تحقيق الانسجام والتوازن في العلاقات بين أفراد الأسرة، أي إعادة بناء الأسرة المُتَّزِنة والمُتأقلِمَة مع الظروف الاجتماعيَّة المُعَاشة وكذلك مساعدة أفرادها على تحقيق النمو السليم عبر تنمية وتعزيز العلاقات الايجابيَّة في ما بينهم، ما يُحقِّق السعادة للأسرة والمجتمع.
