المدينة المنورة من أوائل المدن الإسلامية التي أسست قبل الهجرة بأكثر من 1500 سنة، وقد ساعد موقعها الواقع بين الشام ومكة ثم اليمن على نموها بشكل سريع إذ لم يمض إلا سنوات قليلة على هجرة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم إليها حتى غدت عاصمة الدولة الإسلامية زمنه صلى الله عليه وسلم وخلفاءه الراشدين وصارت من مدن الإسلام الكبرى، وعجت فيها الحياة بمختلف أنشطتها السياسية والإقتصادية والفكرية والإجتماعية مما جعلها محوراً لكثير من الدراسات المختلفة، إلا أن المرأة المدينة لم يكن لها ذلك النصيب منها، على الرغم من إن مصادرنا القديمة لم تغفل دورها فهي حاضرة في مختلف الأنشطة.
لذلك جاء هذا البحث الذي تتبعنا فيه تراجم النساء المدنيات وسيرهنّ، لما فيها من عبر وعظات تستفيد منها المرأة المسلمة أينما كانت وفي أي عصر وجدت، لأن أكثرهن صحابيات، ولم يؤلف كتاب فيهن عن نساء المدينة ولم يكن لنسائها بعد القرن الثاني عشر الهجري شيء يذكر إلا ما ندر، وإلا وددت أن أجمع إعلام النساء على مختلف العصور، لكن قلة ذكرهن في المصادر ولا سيما الحديثة لا يكاد يذكر وإن ذكر إلا القليل كشاعرة أو مؤلفة أو بارعة في علم من العلوم، لذا تركز جمعي على تتبع نساء المدينة المنورة في قرونها الخمسة الأولى الهجرية، وما كان بعدها منهن إلا النزر اليسير، وكان منهجنا هو البحث عن اسم كل امرأة سكنت المدينة وتوفيت فيها أو عاشت فيها مدة وغادرتها، فنذكر جميع نساء المدينة، ومن منهجنا أن نذكر المهاجرين لأنهم دخلوا المدينة وسكنوا فيها، وكذلك نذكر الأنصار لأنهم من سكنة المدينة، وإن لم يذكر أحد أنهن سكنّ المدينة، وأن نسجل ما أمكننا العثور عنهن في حادثة حدثت لهن في المدينة وما حواليها متيقنين أنهن دخلن المدينة مرتبين على حروف الهجائية، وسميته (أعلام نساء المدينة المنورة).
