اختلف الفكر الإسلامي والعربي المعاصر حول تحديد مفهوم السلفية ومضمونه، فثمة اتجاه- يمثله أتباع السلفية ومناصروها- يراها دعوة الإسلام الحق كما أنزله الله تعالى، وأنها الفهم الصحيح للعقيدة الإسلامية كما فهمها أسلافنا. وهناك اتجاه آخر يرى السلفية مقابلًا للتقدمية والمدنية، ويرى أن السلفيين جامدون ورجعيون وأن السلفية "مرحلة زمانية مباركة" وقفت عند نهاية القرون الثلاثة الأولى، وانتهت عندها.
ويواجه مفهوم "السلفية" أزمة حقيقية تتمثل في غموض يحيط به نتج في كثير من جوانبه عن المواقف والتحيزات المختلفة التي اتخذت تجاهه ما بين مؤيد أو معارض أو متحفظ عليه، مع افتقاد أغلبها للتأصيل المنهاجي الواضح للمفهوم.
وبالإضافة إلى الغموض الذي يحيط بمفهوم السلفية، فإن هناك خلطًا وتداخلًا بينه وبين مفاهيم أخرى متعددة، فهناك بعض الدراسات والأدبيات ترادف بين مفهوم السلفية من جانب وبين مفاهيم أخرى ترتبط بالخبرة الغربية تحديدًا، وعليه فتقصر عن الإحاطة بكافة جوانبه مثل مفهوم "الأصولية" FUNDAMENTALISM، أما فيما يتعلق بالخبرة الإسلامية فهناك كثير من المفاهيم التي ترتبط بمفهوم السلفية، وقد استخدمت بعض الأدبيات هذه المفاهيم مرادفًا لمفهوم السلفية نتيجة التداخل والتشابك فيما بينها، ومنها مفهوم "الوهابية"، بالإضافة إلى تصنيف السلفية ضمن تصنيفات متعددة كالإسلام السياسي، والحركات الإسلامية، والأحزاب السياسية الإسلامية. إلا أنه رغم هذا التداخل يظل لكل منها تميزه واختلافه وخصوصيته.
وفي هذا السياق تسعى هذه الدراسة إلى تأصيل مفهوم السلفية وتتبع جذوره في التراث الإسلامي والعربي وتحديد أهم المفاهيم المتعلقة به وأوجه التداخل والاختلاف بينها وبين مفهوم السلفية.
