تربط بلاد اليمن بالحبشة منذ أقدم العصور التاريخية صلات متينة وقوية. وقد سبب الوضع الجغرافي للبلدين اختلاط سكانهما، ولم تنقطع هجرة سكان اليمن وحضرموت إلى الحبشة في العصور الوسطى المختلفة.
هذه رسالة عن وصف مرحلة قصيرة من مراحل الصلات بين الحبشة واليمن في نصف القرن الحادي عشر الهجري، رأى فيها المؤلف المسائل مجردة من كل تعصب أ, تحيز، فوصف لنا مشاهداته في الحبشة وصفاً علمياً دقيقاً، بعقلية قاض عادل نزيه وعالم دقيق خبير.
وقد حمله نظره المجرد إلى الأشياء أن يصل إلى استنتاجات قوية تدل على تحقيق ومعرفة بالأمور. وإن ما وصل إليه من فهم نفسية شعوب الحبشة وأخلاقها مدى إقامته القصيرة بينهم يعتبر دليلاً على حسن فهمه للأمور وثاقب نظره إلى كنه الأشياء. وإن خاصية الأحباش المحافظة جعلتنا نتحقق اليوم من النتائج التي وصل إليها "الحيمي" كاتب هذه الرحلة منذ أكثر من ثلاثة قرون.
