يعتبر النقد وسيلة لجمع وجهات النظر المختلفة التي ترى كلاً من: مشكلة الدراسة، الحدث، مجال الدراسة، مجتمع الدراسة، ويعتبر النقد وسيلة للتفاهم بين البشر، وأن النقد في مجال التعليم، يوضح دور المدارس في إعادة إيجاد الاختلافات الاجتماعية. وأثرت حركات النقد هذه على مجال التربية الخاصة، فقد استخدم النقد للطعن في النظرية السلوكية التي يرتكز عليها الكثير من العمل في مجال التربية الخاصة، وأوضح البعض كيفية مشاركة التربية الخاصة في تصنيف الطلبة على أساس العرق، والثقافة، والدين. ومن الصعب قياس تأثير هذه الانتقادات، ولكن هناك القليل من الأدلة على أن هذه الانتقادات قد أثرت برؤية ذوي الحاجات الخاصة لأنفسهم، ومجال عملهم، أو الناس الذين يخدمونهم. ولا يعتبر التحليل النقدي موضع ترحيب دائماً، وقد يكون حاسما لضمان تنوع الأفكار كوسيلة لحماية مجال الدراسة من العزلة والاضمحلال الفكري والأخلاقي، وإن مقدرة التربية الخاصة على حماية نفسها كمجال من النقد ليست بالشيء السهل، وتعتمد هذه القدرة على استمرار نفي واختراق الانتقادات. يتعرض هذ الكتاب المعلومات المعاصرة في التربية الخاصة من حيث التوجهات الحديثة والقضايا المعاصرة.
