حرص المسلمون على نشر العلم بين الناس؛ حيث كانوا يحملونه معهم في أثناء فتحهم للبلدان، ولم يدخروا جهداً في سبيل تحقيق هدفهم هذا، وتاريخ العراق في العصر الأموي كان من أكثر التواريخ أهمّيّة، لما شهده من أحداث، وما تم خلاله من منجزات، شارك أهل العراق بها إخوانهم العرب المسلمين، وقد كان منها المنجزات العلمية التي شهدها العراق آنذاك البصرة والكوفة. فقد عدتّ البصرة من أهم أمصار الخلافة الإسلامية في العصر الأموي علمياً، لا بل إن بعض العلوم قـد نُسبت إليها مثل علم النحو، ومـن هنا جاء اختياري لموضـوع ( الحياة العلمية في البصرة في العصر الأموي ) لبحث الجذور العلمية الأولى في تلك المدينة، وما وصلت إليه خلال العصر الأموي، لقد اتضح أن صفة التعليم كانت غير رسمية فـي ذلك العصر؛ حيث كان العلماء يجلسون للتدريس تطوعاً في نشر العلم بيـن الناس، وعلى الرغم من كون العصر الأمـوي قـد اتسـم بكثـرة الحـروب والخلافات السياسية إلا أن الأمويين لم يهملوا الجوانب الأخرى، ومنها الجانب العلمي، فعُدّت البصرة من أشهر الأمصار علمياً في ذلك العصر، لا، بل نُسب إليها بعض العلوم البدائية لبدايتها فيها، كعلم النحو وعلم الكـلام، ولم تكـن العلوم الدينية والعربية وحدها التي نشطت في البصرة، وإنما نشطت فيها العلوم الصرفة أيضاً كعلم الطب والصيدلة . وعلماء البصرة في ذلك العصر قادوا الحركة العلمية فيها حتّى أصبحت البصرة من عتبات الإسلام العلمية، يؤمّها طَلَبَة العلم وروّاد المعرفة من جميع أرجاء الخلافة الإسلامية .
