هذا الكتاب قد تمت كتابته باقتناع راسخ أن وجودنا نفسه وإن طرح ذات يوم على انه أعظم الألغاز كلها, إلا أنه لم يعد لغزا لأنه تم حله. وقد حله داروين و والاس, وإن مما فجأنى أن أناسا كثيرين جدا يبدو أنهم ليسو فحسب غير متنبهين إلى الحل الرائع الجميل لهذه المشكلة جد العميقة, بل إنهم أيضا فى حالات كثيرة غير متنبهين بالفعل وعلى نحو لايصدق إلى وجود المشكلة أصلا!
والمشكلة هى مشكلة التصميم المركب. إن الكمبيوتر الذى أكتب عليه هذه الكلمات له قدرة اختزان المعلومات ولما يقرب من 64 كيلو بايت byte (البايت الواحد يستخدم لاختزان كل حرف واحد من النص) وقد صمم هذا الكومبيوتر بوعى وانتج إنتجا متعمدا. أما المخ الذى تفهم به كلماتي فهو نظام من بضع عشرات الملايين من الكيلوعصبات kilo neurones وفى كثير من هذه البلايين من الخلايا العصبية يوجد لكل خلية مايزيد عن ألف "سلك كهربى" يصلها بعصبات أخرى. وفوق ذلك, فإنه على مستوى الوراثيات الجزيئية, تحوى كل خلية واحدة, فيما يزيد عن تربليون خلية فى الجسم, قدرا من المعلومات المرقومة فى شفرة دقيقة يساوي مايحتويه كل الكومبيوتر الذي لدى, وتركب الكائنات الحية يضارعه الكفاءة الرائعة لتصميمها الظاهر, وإذا كان هناك أى شخص لا يوافق على أن هذا الكم من التصميم المركب يصبح مطالبا بتفسير, فإنى أقر باليأس منه.لا, بل إننى بعد التفكير ثانية لا أقر باليأس, لأن أهدافى فى هذا الكتاب هى ان أوصل شيئا من خالص روعة التركيب البيولوجى إلى أولئك الذين لم تنفتح أعينهم بعد له, على أنى إذ أكمل بناء اللغر, فإن هدفى الرئيسى الآخر هو ان أزيله مرة أخري بأن أفسر الحل.
