عد فترة صدر الإسلام أفضل وأقدس فترات التاريخ الإسلامي، ولها في نفوس المسلمين مكانة سامية فضلى ذلك لأنها فترة الرسالة والوحي، فترة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وصحابته أئمة المسلمين وقادتهم، وهي بعد ذلك نقلة كبرى في حياة العرب من عهد راكد محافظ ضال إلى عهد دين وهدى وإيمان ثم حضارة جديدة تبوأت مكانتها الرفيعة بين حضارات العالم ونظمه. ولم يحط عصر من عصور الدنيا بقدسية وإجلال، مثل ما حظى به عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ذلك لأن عهد الرسول وصحابته من بعده هو المثل الأعلى والأكمل لنظام الحكم والإدارة والعبادة والحياة. ولذلك فقد نالت هذه الفترة من العناية والرعاية والدرس والفحص والتمحيص، ومن النقد والتحليل والتفنيد ما لم تنله فترة أخرى في التاريخ العربي وغير العربي، فقد قامت الدراسات الواسعة الضخمة العديدة منذ فجر التاريخ الإسلامي على يد أبناء هذه الأمة العربية المسلمة مبتدئة بجمع القرآن وحفظه وتفسيره وضبط كلماته ومرتقيه إلى علوم الإعجاز واللغة والفلسفة والطبيعة وما وراء الطبيعة وما يستتبع ذلك من علوم وفنون وقد تساندت الدراسات وتشعبت ودرس العصر العرب والمستعربون، المسلمون وغير المسلمين، أنصار الإسلام وأعداؤه، وما زالت الدراسات المتنوعة المتشعبة قائمة مستمرة، وستبقى قائمة مستمرة ما شاء الله لها أن تقوم، وما دام هذا الدين قوياً خالداً، وما دام لهذه الأمة قوة ومكانة، وفي نفوس أبنائها الغيرة على الدين والحرص على اللغة والحب للتاريخ والرغبة في السعي والدرس والتحقيق.
