عمل وعاش أكثر من مرة في سورية، آخرها في أعوام ٢٠٠٤ و٢٠٠٥.
في عام ٢٠٠٦ كان باحثاً في معهد الدراسات العامة في جامعة جورجتاون، في العاصمة الأميركية ولشتطن.
قبل ذلك عمل مراسلاً صحافياً لوكالة الأنباء الألمانية، في عام ٢٠٠٤ عمل صحافياً في سراييفو خلال حرب البوسنة والهرسك، كما كان أيضاً مديراً تنفيذياً لمعهد غوته في القاهرة وميونيخ، وعمل ممثلاً لمؤسسة كونراد أديناور في كولومبيا.
