يثير مفهوم تعديل السلوك جدلاً في أوساط المختصين بعلم النفس فليس هناك تعريف واحد وإنما تعاريف متعددة لهذا المفهوم. فهناك من يستخدم المصطلح للإشارة إلى تطبيق قوانين الإشراط الإجرائي أو الإشراط الكلاسيكي، وهناك من يستخدمه للإشارة إلى قوانين التعلم بعامة. ومن الخطأ استخدام مصطلح تعديل السلوك للإشارة إلى كل الأساليب التي يمكن استخدامها للتأثير في سلوك الإنسان لأن تعديل السلوك ليس مجرد إحداث تغيير في السلوك أو محاولة التأثير فيه.
وأساليب تعديل السلوك تهدف عموماً إلى تحسين الضبط الذاتي وتطويره من خلال تحسين مهارات الفرد وقدراته ومستوى استقلاليته.
وفي هذا الكتاب يضع المؤلف دليلاً للعاملين في المجالات النفسية والتربوية والاجتماعية يهدف إلى إيضاح الأسس النظرية والإجراءات العملية لعملية تعديل السلوك الإنساني حيث يبين المبادئ الرئيسة التي يقوم عليها تعديل السلوك كالتعزيز والعقاب وضبط المثير والمحو والتمييز والتعميم.
كما يتناول تاريخ تعديل السلوك بخاصة والنظرية السلوكية بعامة إذ يوضح إن تعديل السلوك هو الفرع التطبيقي في علم النفس السلوكي ويعرض لدراسات الباحثين الأوائل والمنهجية التي استخدموها والبحوث الكلاسيكية والمراجع الأساسية في ميدان علم النفس السلوكي والتطبيقي. كما يتناول القضايا والأحداث والتطورات الهامة بإيجاز.
ويتحدث المؤلف أيضاً عن المعايير المستخدمة لتعريف السلوك الشاذ وتمييزه عن السلوك السوي، ويناقش القضايا الأساسية التي ينبغي أخذها بعين الاهتمام عند تحديد السلوكات المستهدفة وتعريفها. إضافة إلى القياس وأهدافه وطرقه حيث إن طريقة القياس التي يختارها معدل السلوك تعتمد على وجهة نظره حول أسباب السلوك.
ويعرض المؤلف بإيجاز لبعض المشكلات التي قد تترتب على استخدام تقنية مقارنة المجموعات في تعديل السلوك. ويعرض المؤلف أخيراً لتقنيات التعديل وتنفيذ برامج تعديل السلوك المعرفي وتعميم السلوك المكتسب والمحافظة على استمراريته.
