الزكاة عبادة فيها حقّان: حق لله، وحق للمستحقين من الفقراء والمساكين. ولئن كان بعض المسلمين يهملون تأدية زكاة أموالهم شحاً وبخلاً أو جهلاً، فإن كثيرين منهم يرغبون في القيام بواجباتهم الشرعية على أكمل وجه، ولكنهم يجهلون ما يستحق عليهم، نتيجة تطور الحياة البشرية، وتغيّر طبيعة الأموال والمداخيل، ما يتطلب دراسات حديثة توضح للمسلمين ما يجب عليهم.
ولذلك تناول مؤلف الكتاب الأستاذ الجامعي المختص بالعقائد والأديان في هذا البحث آراء الأقدمين والمحدثين. وتمتاز دراسته من بين الأبحاث الأخرى بأنه رجّح بين الآراء المختلفة، وأدلى برأيه، وبخاصة في مستجدات العصر الحاضر ومحدثاته، وبيّن نسبة الزكاة المفروضة على مختلف المداخيل المستحدثة من رواتب ومستخرجات الأرض. وشرح الأساليب العملية للجباية والإنفاق.
