يتضمن هذا الكتاب أربع دراسات كتبتها بتكليفات من عدة هيئات. طلب من القائمون على مهرجان القاهرة السينمائى بمناسبة مرور مئة عام على بداية السينما المصرية أن أكتب دراسة عن الحوار فى السينما المصرية.
وما لبثت الفرصة أن سنحت لى مرة أخرى عندما دق جرس التليفون بعد ذلك بعدة أشهر فإذا به الصديق محمد عبد الفتاح يخبرنى بأن الصديق أحمد رأفت بهجت يريد أن يقابلنى ونعقد جلسة ثلاثية لمناقشة أحد الأمور. وبالفعل اجتمعت معهما فعلمت أن اتحاد النقابات الفنية يعتزم إقامة ندوة بالتعاون مع إحدى الهيئات الأجنبية التى لا أذكر اسمها الآن وربما كانت ألمانية الجنسية عن مشاكل السينما المصرية. ولكن المشاكل فى هذه المرة كانت تنحصر فى الجوانب الفنية من سيناريو وإخراج وتصوير ومونتاج وديكور. وجرى نقاش طويل بيننا فى فريق العمل الذى يتولى هذا الأمر وفى النهاية استقر بنا الرأى على بعض المشهود بعلمهم وكفاءتهم فى مجال الإبداع السينمائى بحيث يكتب كل واحد عن المشاكل التى تخص مهنته. وبالطبع كانت الكتابة عن مشاكل السيناريو فى السينما المصرية من نصيبى.
وعندما طلبت منى جريدة القاهرة- وهى جريدة ثقافية راقية تحظى بإعجاب القارئ المتزايد واحترام للمواد التى تقدمها- أن أشارك بالكتابة فيها عرضت عليهم هذه الدراسة فقاموا بنشرها على الفور على ثلاث حلقات. ثم ما لبثوا بعد ذلك أن كلفونى بكتابة موضوع عن حرب أكتوبر والسينما المصرية. وتحمست للموضوع وبدأت القراءة حوله.
وأخيراً كلفتنى جريدة "القاهرة" أيضا فى ذكرى ميلاد الأديب العالمى نجيب محفوظ وربما كان بمناسبة بلوغه سن التسعين من عمره المديد بأن أكتب شيئا عن علاقة هذا الأديب الكبير بالسينما المصرية. وبعد تفكير رأيت أن أعالج جانبا واحدا فى هذه العلاقة وهو جانب السيناريو الذى كان يحترفه نجيب محفوظ السينما المصرية. فوجدت أنه من الممكن أن يكون الكاتب أديبا عظيما يحظى بجائزة نوبل فى الأدب ولكنه من الممكن فى نفس الوقت أن يكون كاتب سيناريو متوسط القيمة. ولم يكن نجيب محفوظ وحده الذى نستطيع أن نطبق عليه هذا الرأى فهناك كثير من الأدباء حاولوا مثل نجيب محفوظ ولكن محاولاتهم كانت أدنى بكثير من محاولات نجيب محفوظ.
