وفق التقديرات الخاصة بالخيارات سوف يتأثر العالم العربي تأثراً شديداً بالتغيرات المناخية اللاحقة، وما يجب توقعه أن التغير المناخي غير المكبوح الجماح سوف يزيد وطأة المشكلات البيئية القائمة في هذه المنطقة من العالم، وسوف يؤدي تراجع نسب المتساقطات، ومع اقتران هذا التراجع بمستوى أعلى وأشد لتبخر الماء نتيجة درجات الحرارة الأعلى في المنطقة التي تعد قليلة المياه على أي حال، إلى مآزق دراماتيكية. أما ما يواجه التهديد الأكبر والأخطر فهو النظم الزراعية، وهو بعبارات أخرى دخل الأعداد الكبيرة من السكان وأمنهم الغذائي والحيوي. كما أن ارتفاع مستوى سطح البحر، والجفاف، والأوضاع المناخية الأخرى لن يترتب عليهن ألوان من تدمير البيئة فحسب، بل سيترتب عليها أيضاً إضطرابات إجتماعية، ونزوح وهجرة، وصراعات أخرى. وبهذه الروح ننشر بالتعاون مع دار قدمس هذا الكتاب... ونأمل أن يفيد المهتمين في الحصول على المعلومات، وأن يفضي إلى مناقشة عامة حافلة بالتنوع في وجهات النظر.
