هذا هو الكتاب الثاني من سلسلة المعضلات، التي بدأت بكتاب معضلة التنمية الإستعمارية، وتهدف إلى الإجابة عن بعض الأسئلة التاريخية المتعلقة بظواهر أو حوادث لم تقدم الإجابات الإختزالية السائدة تفسيرات مقنعة لها.
وقد جمع كتاب معضلة قراءة التاريخ مجموعة من هذه الظواهر والحوادث من تاريخنا الإسلامي بشكل رئيسي محاولاً النظر إليها نظرة أوسع من الزوايا الضيقة التي تُحصر فيها عادة، وتكون الأحكام المبنية عليها غير منسجمة مع مواقع هذه الظواهر أو الحوادث في التاريخ، فليس وقوع حادثة سيئة يعني الحكم سلباً على قرون تسبقها وتعقبها، وليس وجود ظاهرة حسنة دليلاً قاطعاً على أننا يمكن أن نعممها على منظومة تحتوي ظواهر أخرى قد تكون شديدة السلبية مقارنة بهذه الإيجابية.
خلاصة الفكرة التي يسعى هذا الكتاب لتثبيتها هي وجوب النظرة الشاملة للحدث أو الظاهرة مع وضعه في سياقه الطبيعي وعدم إنتزاعه خارج مكانه وزمانه وذلك لا يكون إلا بمقارنته بالأحداث والظواهر والمعاصر له، ولكن هذا لا يعني تبرير الخطأ بحجة السياق، بل وجوب الفهم الشامل قبل إصدار الحكم التاريخي.
