في هذا الكتاب يروي واحد من أبناء قبيلة شمر العريقة وهو المؤرخ والشاعر نهار بن هيشان الوبير الشمري صفحات من "ملاحم شمر التاريخية في عصورهم الذهبية" العنوان الذي انتخبه ليكتب كما يقول: "نكتب عن الماضي الإيجابي للإفتخار" و"نكتب عن الماضي السلبي للإعتبار" اعتبرها المؤلف حالة ومرحلة من مراحل التاريخ التي يجب أن تكتب بسلبياتها وإيجابياتها.
من هنا، سيقع القارئ للكتاب على قصص وأشعار تشكل صورة واقعية عن صراع القبائل فيما بينها بإنتصاراتها وهزائمها، بفرسانها وبقادتها، لكي تقرأها الأجيال الجديدة، وهنا تصبح كتابة التاريخ وملاحمه ذات أهمية "لأن معرفة الماضي أساسي للوعي بأهمية الحاضر..." وأن "جميع الكتاب ذات العلاقة بالقبائل وأبناء البادية يجب أن تقرأ".
إنطلاقاً من هذا المفهوم يمكن القول أن من لا ماضٍ له لا حاضر ينتظره.
وفي هذا السياق يتحدث المؤلف عن تاريخ قبيلة العلي وآل رشيد وأسلوبهم بالكرم والشجاعة ومواجهة الأعداء، ويذكر ملاحم شمر التاريخية: وقعئع حربية مع بعض القبائل فتحضر في الكتاب معارك منها "وقعة بقعا" و"وقعة حمّا ابن حثلين بين ابن رشيد وابن صباح" ومعركة أبو عجاج، وغيرها من مرويات ذات صلة عند بعض القبائل.
كما يسرد الكتاب ما جاء في الكتب التاريخية عن قبائل أخرى بالإضافة إلى شمر ويعرض لوضع قبيلة "شمر" في نجد قبل آل رشيد، وصور أخرى من أجواء البادية وملاحمها التاريخية بما فيها العادات والتقاليد وفنون العيش.
ويختتم الكتاب بقصائد للمؤلف نذكر منها: "في وجه شمر وهل الخيل زعلانه"، "الشيوخ ما هم مثل لون الفداوية"، "كل ناسٍ تريد تعرف تاريخها"... وقصائد أخرى.
