واضع هذا الديوان هو "حسان بن ثابت" من بني النجار ثم من الخوارج، ينتهي نسبه إلى قحطان، فهو إذاً يمني، أمه الفُريعة بنت خالد بن قيس، من الخزرج كذلك؛ كان يكنى أبا الوليد، وأبا الحسام. وُلد حسان في يثرب ونشأ فيها، فهو إذاً من أهل المدن والقرى، وعلى نشأته الحضرية كان متأثراً بالحياة البدوية، يظهر ذلك في شعره خصوصا ما قاله في جاهليته. اتصل بالغساسنة ملوك الشام، فكان يفد عليهم في عواصمهم، كجلق والجولان وبصرى وغيرها، فيمدح أمراءهم...
ولما ظهر الإسلام، وهاجر النبي إلى يثرب؛ أسلمت الأوس والخزرج وأسلم حسّان، فكان من الأنصار، على أنه كان مشهوراً بجبنه، فلم يناصر الدين الجديد بسيفه، ولم يكن يذهب إلى القتال، بيد أنه إذا كان لم يناصر الدين الجديد بسيفه، فقد نصره بلسانه، سلاحه الوحيد الذي شهره على أعداء النبي، فصار بذلك شاعر الرسول يمدحه ويردّ على من يهجوه من شعراء قريش. وشعر حسان في الجاهلية أجود من شعره في الإسلام؛ على أنه مهما قيل في شعره الإسلامي، فهو في نضاله عن النبي يصور عصره أصدق تصوير بما فيه من مناضلة بين الإسلام والشرك. ويعطينا صورة واضحة عن تهاجي الأنصار والقرشيين، وعما في هذا الهجاء من فحش وإقذاع، وهو نوع جديد دخل، بشعر حسّان، الآداب العربي، نجد فيه الشعر السياسي الصحيح المستند إلى عقيدة، فكأنه في تحمسه للدين الجديد يمهد الطريق للشعر الديني في الإسلام. قال أبو عبيدة: "فضل حسان الشعراء بثلاث: كان شاعر الأنصار في الجاهلية، وشاعر النبي في النبوة، وشاعر اليمن كلها في الإسلام". وشهد له النابغة لما سمعه في الجاهلية، فقال له: "إنك لشاعر".
كل هذا وغير من الأقوال فيه يدل على أنه كان شاعراً فحلاًن متصرفاً في فنون الشعر كلها. وقد عُرفت ديباجته بنقاوتها وجزالتها وسهولة ألفاظها، وقد أجمع الرواة على أنه "أشعر أهل المدر". وهذا الكتاب من سلسلة "ديوان العرب" يجمع بين طياته شعر "حسان بن ثابت" موزعاً على حروف المعجم.
