أصبح هذا الإسهام البارز في التاريخ العثماني منشوراً الآن باللغة العربية في مجلدين، وكانت الطبعة الأولى قد صدرت باللغة الإنكليزية في عام 1994 (ثم أعيد طبعها مرات عدة: 1997، 1999، 2000)، ويعتبر هذا الكتاب وعلى نطاق واسع، نقطة انعطاف هامة في دراسة إحدى أطول الإمبراطورية حوالي عام 1300 حتى عشية سقوطها خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى. إن مدى هذه التغطية الواسعة وشموليتها يجعلان هذين المؤلفين ركيزة أساسية لفهم التطورات المعاصرة في كل من الشرق الأوسط وعالم البلقان ما بعد الإتحاد السوفياتي.
يغطي المجلد الأول، وهو من تأليف خليل إينالجك، الفترة الممتدة من عام 1300 إلى عام 1600. أما الكتاب الثاني، الذي ساهم في تأليفه كل من ثريا فاروقي، وبروس ماك غوان، ودونالد كواترت وشوكت باموك، فيكمل الوقائع حتى عام 1914. ويدرس كل مجلد التطورات التي أصابت السكان، والتجارة، والمواصلات، والصناعة، وملكية الأراضي والاقتصاد، كما يقدم معلومات كثيفة حول المصادر والمراجع وكل ما له صلة بالموضوعات المطروحة للطلاب الجامعيين والباحثين الآخرين الذين يرغبون في التعمق بمزيد من التفاصيل.
ويشكل هذان المؤلفان منطلقاً أساسياً لأية دراسة مستقبلية في أي جانب من جوانب التاريخ العثماني.
