ذات يوم من تلك الأيام البعيدة الطيبة هناك، عندما كنت في التاسعة وكان العالم مليئاً بكل أنواع العظمة التي يمكن تخيلها، وكانت الحياة ما تزال حلماً غامضاً وبهيجاً، جاء إلى بيتي مراد ابن عمي، الذي كان يعتبر مجنوناً من قبل جميع الذين يعرفونه فيما عداي، عند الرابعة صباحاً وأيقظني بالنقر على نافذة غرفتي.
آرام، قال.
قفزت من السرير ونظرت عبر النافذة.
لم أصدق ما رأيت.
لم يحل الصباح بعد، ولكن الوقت كان صيفاً، ومع انبلاج النهار منذ دقائق قرب تلك المنطقة من العالم، كان يوجد من الضوء ما يكفي لأن يجعلني أعرف بأنني لم أكن أحلم.
كان مراد ابن عمي جالساً فوق جواد أبيض جميل.
أخرجت رأسي من النافذة وحككت عيني.
نعم، قال بالأرمينية. إنه جواد. إنك لست في حلم. أسرع إن كنت تريد أن تركت.
أعرف أن مرادا ابن عمي يستمتع بوجوده حياً أكثر من أي شخص آخر سقط، في أي وقت، في العالم عن طريق الخطأ. ولكن هذا كان يوفق ما استطيع تصديقه.
ففي المحل الأول، كانت ذكرياتي الباكرة ذكريات حول الجياد مثلما كانت تشوقاتي الباكرة تشوقات لركوبها.
كان هذا الجزء الرائع.
وفي المحل الثاني، نحن فقراء.
كان هذا هو الجزء الذي منعني من أن أصدق ما رأيت.
