لكثير من المتأدبين عندنا اليوم نظرة ازدراء إلى شعر المديح ويبالغ بعضهم فيسميه: " شعر التسولين" إغراقا في الحط من شانه إلا اننا لا نسلم لهم بكل ما يدعون. فليغربلوا هذه الأشعار وليخرجوا منها ما قاله الشاعر طلبا للرزق ثم ليستجلوا نفس الشاعر من ضعره وليتبينوا منازعه من خلال أقواله، وليحللوا تلك الإشارات التى تنم عن مراميه وخفيات ضميره فإن هذا القليل ربما أوصلهم إلى كثير يرفع من قدر شعرائنا في نظرنا وفي نظر غيرنا.
على مقتضى هذه القواعد الأولية سرنا في وضع هذا الكتاب ولا ندعى أننا جئنا بالبراهين القاطعة والأدلة الساطعة والحجج البالغة والبينات الدامغة! ولكنا نزعم أننا وفقنا إلى تعرف الرجل قبل ان نتعرف شعره. فاستعنا بواضح أمره على تلمس خفي سره.
