نقل سراً خمسة مرضى من مشفى الأمراض العقلية إلى بناية يملكها في جيهانغير، وأسكنهم في خمس شقق منفصلة. وبدأ يرسم خطة للتغلب على الجان.
الرواية المنسوجة من المعتقدات الخرافية وتفسير الأحلام والجان والجنيات والقصص السريالية، تضع حيوات الناس الواقعية والمأساوية تحت المجهر. تسلط الرواية الضوء على نحو خاص على الأطفال الذين نشؤوا محرومين من الحب وعانوا مشكلات خطيرة في علاقاتهم بذويهم، الأمر الذي سيدفعون ثمنه بالوقوع في أزمات خطيرة في سن الرشد، فيدخلون عالم الرعب الذي تفسره الثقافة الشعبية بالجان، تلك المخلوقات الافتراضية التي تمكنت حتى من السيطرة على عقل طبيب ووجهت مصيره.
