يتناول الكتاب ظاهرة الاشتراك اللفظي التي تعد من الظواهر الشائعة في معظم اللغات. وإن كانت هذه الظاهرة ميزة في اللغة العربية كما يرى بعض الدارسين. أو مثلباً في هذه اللغة يجلِّلها بالغموض وينأى بها عن الفصاحة عند دارسين آخرين.
وحاول الكتاب كشف النقاب عن ذلك بدراسة قوائم بين التنظير والتطبيق. كما ركز على الجانب التطبيقي الذي اتخذ القرآن الكريم أساساً له. انطلاقاً من أن القرآن هو النص الوحيد الذي تكفَّل الله عزّ وجلّ بحفظه من أن تطاله يد التحريف أو التصحيف.
بعد ذلك تناول الكتاب في بابه الأول تعريفاً بجهود السابقين حول ظاهرة الاشتراك في مجال اللغة، وعلم أصول الفقه، والمنطق، وعلوم القرآن.
بينما خصص الباب الثاني لدراسة ألفاظ قرآنية أجمع على ذكرها خمسة كتب على الأقل من مصادر الوجوه والنظائر، بوصفها كتباً جمعت ألفاظ المشترك في القرآن الكريم.
وحاول الكتاب حصر جميع ألفاظ المشترك القرآني التي ذكرتها سبعة مصنفات في علم الوجوه والنظائر، ثم التركيز على ما تكرر ذكره وأجمع عليه خمسة من علماء الوجوه والنظائر القرآنية. ومن ثم استقراء تلك الألفاظ ومناقشتها وفقاً للمنهج التاريخي الذي يقرّ الألفاظ على أصولها إن عرفت، ويبحث عن تلك الأصول إن جهلت، ويغض الطرف عما تؤول إليه بعد تطور يطرأ عليها إن في أصواتها، أو في دلالاتها. استند الكتاب على هذا المنهج في تحليل ألفاظ الاشتراك في القرآن الكريم.
في هذا الكتاب بحث علمي يبرهن على أن الإعجاز اللغوي في القرآن يتجلى في انفراد كل لفظ بمعنى مستقل لا يشاركه فيه غيره، فالفصاحة والمشترك لا يلتقيان في نص واحد برأيه، وله على ذلك أدلته ومناقشاته المفيدة، معتمداً في ذلك على جهود السابقين والمحدثين، ومافي علمي أصول الفقه والمنطق وعلوم القرآن الكريم، ودراسة الألفاظ المشتركة في القرآن الكريم وتحليلها.
