جاء الإسلام فقضى على كثير من المعتقدات والنزعات قضاء ظاهرياً، واختفت تحت سيطرته المذاهب القديمة التي شملها نفوذه، ولم يمر عليه أكثر من قرنين حتى بدأت تلك المعتقدات تظهر بعد إختفائها، متخذة من نصوص الدين الإسلامي مظهراً لها ومسوغاً لإنتشارك، فكان القرآن الكريم والسنّة الشريفة، وكان الإجتهاد والقياد والقياس من أكبر المصادر التي تستمد منها تلك المذاهب.
أضف إلى ذلك الطرائق ومبادئ التصوف التي كان للخيال فيها مسرح واسع، فلم ينتصف القرن الثاني للهجرة إلا وتشعبت الطرائق إلى أسماء كثيرة مختلفة.
وكان للأقوام التي أستلمت مرغمة، الدور المهم في هذا التشعب، إذ كان يكفي لإنشاء المذهب أو المعتقد بين كثير من الأقوام غير المحتضرة، أن يظهر داعية عليه ظاهرة الزهد والتقى، فيغري الأقوام التي تحف به، وتؤخذ تصريحاته وآراؤه فتتحور، وتناقلها الألسن والأفواه، فتصبح معتقداً محاطاً بكثير من خرافات العامة ونزعاتها.
