ولد محمد خير الدين بمدينة تافراوت، جنوب المغرب، سنة 1941، ثم هاجر إلى مدينة الدار البيضاء شأنه شأن باقي أقرانه بحثا عن أفق أفضل.
كان متمردا على كل أشكال السلطة، فأضرب في وقت مبكر عن الدراسة، وبعدها عن العمل، ليتفرغ للأدب، فكان الشعر أول محطاته، ليهجره إلى الرواية.
اختار المنفى الاختياري مدة تقارب العشرين سنة في الديار الفرنسية هارباً من الملاحقة القانونية لاشتراكه في انتفاضة مارس 1965، ولم يعد إلى أحضان الوطن إلا سنة 1970 ليمكث به إلى أن وافته المنية سنة 1995.
تتألف أعمال خير الدين من رويات وأشعار، متغايرة الأشكال، موسومة بيمسم التزام سياسي واجتماعي قوي، جعلته أحد أهم الاصوات المجددة في الأدب المغاربي المكتوب بالفرنسية.
من أهم أعماله: - أغادير - النباش - أغنشيش - يوميات سرير الموت (مذكرات)
