كان تأليفي لهذا الكتاب بدأ عام ثلاثة وأربعين وثلاثمائة عند فراغي من تنقيح كتاب (رتبة الحكيم) واتممته في آخر عام ثمانية وأربعين وثلاثمائة فالمحرك لي لتأليفه ما رأيت أكثر أهل زماننا يبحثون عنه من أمر الطلسمات وفنون أنواع السحر وهم لا يعلمون ما يطلبون ولا لأي سبيل يقصدون قد فنيت أعمارهم في مطلوب قد حيل بينهم وبينه لستر الحكماء إياه وأعراضهم عن كشفه لما فيه من خراب العالم ودثوره والله يأبى ذلك مصلحة لعالمه فلذلك شيدوا أبنية البرابي ووضعوا فيها نقوشات الصور تنبيها وتذكية للعقل وخلدوا ما خلدوا في الكتب بالرموز والتعميات لئلا يفهمها إلا الحكيم مثلهم وأفادوا فما بين ذلك وبينوا الأسرار لمن عقل عنهم فرأيت أن أبث للقوم وأشرح لهم الطريق المعمى في هذه النتيجة المسماة سيميا وأبين ما أخفوه الحكماء من أمر هذه النتيجة السحرية كما فعلنا في النتيجة الصنعوية وأقسم هذا الكتاب على أربع مقالات كما فعلنا في (الرتبة) كل مقالة منها مفيدة بعدة فصول، المقالة الأولى من النسب، المقالة الثانية من الصور الفلكية وأفعالها، المقالة الثالثة في حظوظ الكواكب، والمقالة الرابعة في سحر الأكراد والنبط والحبشة.
