هناك اعتقاد بأن القيادة موهبة فطرية تمتلكها فئة قليلة من الناس، وأن "الكاريسما" القيادية وقف على أشخاص أوتوا القدرة على سياسة الآخرين وتزعمهم والتعامل مع إرادتهم، وأنه لا مجال لمن حرموا من هذه الموهبة أن يتصدوا للقيادة أو تتاح لهم فرصها.
ورغم إيماننا بأن القيادة، في بعض جوانبها، فن يعتمد على الموهبة الفطرية، وأن "الكاريسما" القيادية عامل أساسي لأهلية القيادة، وخاصة في المستويات العليا، فإننا مع الرأي القائل بأن الجوانب الأخرى للقيادة عبارة عن علم، رسم قواعده وحدد أصوله تاريخ طويل من تجارب القادة العظام، وأن معرفة هذا العلم وممارسة القيادة العملية لا يؤديان فقط إلى تحسين الأهلية القيادية لأصحاب المواهب الفطرية والوصول بهذه الأهلية إلى مستويات ممتازة، ولكنهما يؤديان أيضاً إلى تنمية الأهلية القيادية لقادة المستويات المتوسطة والصغرى، حتى لو لم يكن هؤلاء القادة يملكون في الأساس قسطاً عالياً من موهبة القيادة الفطرية. ومن هنا تنبع أهمية هذا الكتاب، الذي يقدم خلاصة خبرات كبار القادة والمفكرين العالميين، على شكل قواعد وأقوال مأثورة يمكن أن يهتدي بها مل قائد وكل من يعد نفسه ليكون قائداً، فيجمع بين الموهبة والاكتساب، ويفوز بميزة القيادة الواعية.
