قامت هذه الدراسة بإعمال المنهج الإحصائي على شعراء من ذوي الانتماءات الفنية المختلفة كانوا رموزًا لمعركة الديوان التي تعد من أشهر المعارك النقدية في تاريخ الأدب العربي الحديث. وكانت الغاية الأساسية من الدراسة هي اختبار المقولات النقدية التي دار حولها الجدل، واتخاذها فرضيات ينطلق منها البحث للكشف عن طبيعتها، والتحقق من مدى صدقها؛ لقياس الفجوة التي يمكن أن تنشأ بين التشريع النقدي والممارسة الفنية. وقد حظى فن الرثاء عند أصحاب الاتجاه المحافظ بقدر كبير من هجوم أصحاب الديوان. واختير كل من شوقي وحافظ ممثلين للاتجاه المحافظ. أما شعراء الديوان فمعالجتهم لهذا الفن هي المجال المتوقع لإبراز الفروق بين المدرستين؛ بحكم كونهم نقادًا شعراء؛ فالبحث عن الفروق الفنية بين الاتجاهين إنما يكون فيما اشتركا في أدائه واختلفا في فهم طبيعته، وكيفية التعبير عنه، ومن هنا كان على الباحثة أن تكشف عن حصيلة التفاعل بين المظهرين النقدي والإبداعي عند أصحاب الديوان؛ لكي تتحقق من مدى ارتباط منهجهم النظري بممارستهم الشعرية.
