كل الكلمات الرقيقة العطوف التي كان كريكوري يجلس بها، كلما كان يتذكر طفليه في الغابة ليلة إثر ليلة، اختفت من ذاكرته الآن، فجثا على ركبتيه وجعل يقبل يدي ولده الوردتين الصغيرتين دون أن يستطيع أن ينطق بغير هذه الكلمات، وبصوت مختنقاً: "ولدي الصغير... ولدي الصغير"، ثم رفعه على ذراعيه، وسأله، وهو يتفرس في نهم، بعينين ناضبتين، تلتهبان افتتاناً، كيف حال الجميع؟ كيف حال عمتك وبوليوشكا... هل هم جميعاً بخير؟ فأجاب ميشاتكا وهو لا يزال ينظر إلى أبيه: عمتي بخير، لكن بوليوشكا ماتت في الخريف...بمرض الخناق، والعم ميخائيل جندي... والآن، إذا لذلك الشيء الصغير الذي ظل كريكوري يتحرق إليه شوقاً، عبر ليالٍ عديدة لم يعرف فيها النوم، يحدث: إذا به يقف عند بوابة بيته هو، حاملاً ولده بين ذراعيه، كان هذا كل ما تركته له الحياة، كل ما وصله، لفترة قصيرة أخرى، بالأرض وبالعالم الفسيح الذي ترامى متألقاً تحت أشعه الشمس الفاترة".
الدون الهادئ رائعة من روائع الأدب العالمي، تمتزج أحداثها التي تجعل من طياتها أخبار نضال وثورة ومعارك بمسحة إنسانية تضفي عليها كثيراً من الدرامية الروائية، هكذا التقى كريكوري بولديه، وهكذا أتم شولوخوف الجزء الأخير من "الدون الهادئ". وقد ترجمت الرواية إلى نحو ستين لغة، وأعيد طبعها في الاتحاد السوفيتي مائة وسبعاً وسبعين طبعة.
