هرمس شخصية مغرقة في القدم ويكتنف الغموض أصلها وانتماءها العرقي. كل ينسبها إليه، فاليونانيون يعدونه يونانياً، والمصريون القدماء يعدونه مصرياً، والعرب يعدونه منهم (ادريس) كما أشار إليه القرآن وكذلك يدعي الفرس وغيرهم أنه منهم.
ولعلّ هذا التداخل والتضارب يعود إلى تلك المرحلة البعيدة من الاختلاط بين شعوب الأقوام التي كانت تعيش في البقاع التي كانت تشكل مركز العالم القديم: جزيرة العرب وامتدادتها بلاد الشام وبلاد الرافدين ثم مصر، وتلك المناطق الأخرى المجاورة، بلاد فارس واليونان.
ومع ظهور الاسكندر المقدوني، تلميذ المعلم الأول أرسطو، وبسط نفوذه على العالم المأهول آنذاك ورغبته في توحيد الأمم ضمن دولة واحدة وخلق دين واحد، أتيح لكافة المذاهب الفكرية والدينية أن تطرح ما لديها وتتلاقح فيما بينها. وهذا ما كان له الأثر الكبير في تداخل وتقارب الأفكار ونموها. فكان للجميع مساهمتهم. ومن هنا، ربما، كان لكل جهة أن تتبنى هذه الشخصية الشهيرة/هرمس/التي كانت على الأغلب بنت تلك المرحلة من الزمن، كما كان لها أن تدعي أن لها نصيباً في هذه النصوص التي تحتويها الكتب الهرمسية.
يتألف هذا الكتاب من قسمين: دراسة حديثة قام بها لويس مينارد محاولاً التوصل إلى أصل الكتب الهرمسية وهي تساعد القارئ في الدخول إلى القسم الثاني الذي يحتوي على النصوص المغرقة في القدم والمنسوبة إلى هرمس والتي يعدها بعض المفكرين بداية انطلاق الأديان اللاحقة التي عمَّت العالم وما تزال.
