تبدأ الدراسة المركزة للنصوص النقشية العربية الجنوبية من زمن هيلفي، قبل نحو مائة سنة، ومنذ ذلك الحين، أنجز المختصون جزءً كبيراً في دراستها؛ ولكن يجب أن نعترف بأنه لم يتحقق إلا شيء يسير نسبياً في سبيل عرض نتائج تلك الأبحاث عرضاً ميسراً لغير المختصين...
وإن السبب، بلا شك، هو إن الكنايات النقشية كانت وما زالت تزداد بإطراد، وإن أي إكتشاف جديد يمكن أن يغير إلى حد ما الصورة الكلية؛ وإن هناك عزوناً عاماً عن نشر المعلومات التي قد تكون ذات صفة عابرة والتي يمكن أن تصبح قديمة في وقت قصير، مع الخشية من إستمرار القارئ العادي على قبول مثل تلك المعلومات، وعدم تتبع نقضها الذي قد يظهر في مقال محدود التداول.
وعلى أي حال، فأنه من واجب المختصين أن يعرضوا ما وصلت إليه البحوث في هذا المجال من وقت لآخر، مع تحذير القارئ من قبول ذلك العرض الأجمالي قبولاً ونهائياً، لأن التقدم المتواصل لمثل هذه الدراسات سيؤدي بالتأكيد إلى تعديل الوضع القائم.
غن أول ما كتب في قواعد هذه الكتابات النقشية كان هومل في كتابه Sudarabische Chrestomathie (ميونبخ 1893)، ولكن المنهج الذي اتبعه هومل لم يكن مناسباً؛ لأنه بما أن كتابه كان معنياً بالنصوص الحميرية فأنه اتخذها أساساً لقواعده.
إن كتابنا هذا هو محاولة لعرض قواعد تلك النصوص عرضاً منظماً حسب معرفتنا اليوم بها، وجرى تأليفه بمنهج وصفي دقيق، وقد تجنبت الموازنة بينه وبين اللغات الشقيقة الأخرى عدا في حالة أو حالتين.
وإن العرض الوصفي المحض من هذا النوع هو ضرورة سابقة لدراسة قواعدية مقارنة، وقد استعملت على أي حال، بلا قيود المصطلحات الجارية في الدراسات اللغوية للغات جزيرة العرب، لأنه من غير المحتمل أن يقدم أحد على دراسة هذه النصوص بلا معرفة سابقة بمشكلات تلك اللغات ومصطلحاتها.
