يسمى المؤلف كتابه وبإصرار: "رواية", وليس فيه من خصائص الرواية التى يعرفها القراء ويتوقعونها شئ, فلا بطل ولاشخوص ولاحكاية ولاسرد ولاحوار ولاحبكة... لاشئ تقريبا. ومع ذلك ففى الكتاب كل شئ تقريبا. إنه كتاب موسوعى بالمعنى الدقيق للكلمة, ففيه من علوم الفيزياء, إلى تاريخ الأمم والحضارات المختلفة, وإلى ما يتصل بتخلق الكون والجيولوجيا وطبقات الأرض, إلى علوم الإنسان والأنثروبولوجيا, إلى الفنون والآداب بأنواعها المختلفة وفى عصورها المختلفة.
