كانت بداية المصدر اليهدي الذي تم تأليفه في المملكة الجنوبية (يهوداً) ما بين القرن التاسع والثامن قبل الميلاد، ويصف هذا العمل الأدبي قصة بني إسرائيل من بداية العالم، وحتى الدخول إلى أرض كنعان بقيادة يشوع تبع هذا المصدر بحوالي قرن من هذا الزمان تأليف المصدر الإلوهيمي كرؤية مستقلة عن رؤية المصدر البهوي، وعلى الرغم من أن المصدر الإلوهيمي يصف نفس التاريخ الذي يصفه المصدر البهوي، إلا أنه يتجاوز الأصحاحات "1101" من سفر التكوين ليبدأ فصله مع إبراهيم "عليه السلام" وفي حوالي القرن السابع قبل الميلاد، اندمج المصدران البهوي والإلوهيمي في عمل أدبي واحد بواسطة محرر أو مدرسة من المحررين لظروف سياسية اجتماعية مضطربة تعرض هذا العمل الأدبي لعملية أخرى من التحرير في القرن السادس قبل الميلاد، حيث تم إدماج ما يعرف بالمصدر النثنوي إلى المصدرين البهوي والإلوهيمي، واخيراً يأتي المصدر الكهنوني ليكون المرحلة الأخيرة في عمليات التحرير وينضم في حوالي القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد إلى المصادر الثلاثة السابقة، وفي كل مرحلة من هذه المراحل، كان كل محررأو مجموعة من المحررين يعدل ويتضح في هذا العمل الأدبي حتى خرج في صورته النهائية على يد الكاهن عزرا.
