يدور موضوع الكتاب حول صفة الإعتقادات الدينية في مذهب الشيعة الإمامية، جاءت بعناية الصدوق "ابي جعفر محمد بن علي القمي" بمزيد من الشرح والتفصيل والتبويب الحسن المدعم بآيات الذكر الحكيم، وأقوال علماء الإمامية الأوائل والمتأخرين. يقول مؤلف الكتاب "اعلم أن اعتقادنا في التوحيد: أن الله تبارك وتعالى واحد أحد، قديم، لم يزل ولا يزال سميعاً بصيراً، عليماً حكيماً، حياً قدوماً، قدوساً، قادراً، غنياً، لا ويوصف، بجوهر ولا جسم، ولا صورة (...)".
تتوزع أبواب الكتاب في خمسة وأربعون باباً في صفة الاعتقاد استند فيها الصدوق إلى أحاديث أهل بيت النبوة، وعلماء اسلام أمثال: الكفعمي، وكتاب الكافي، والعلامة المجلسي، والفيض الكاشاني، والطزسي وغيرهم. ومن أبواب الكتاب نذكر بعضاً من العناوين التي تناولت مسائل شتى: 1- باب في صفة اعتقاد الإمامية في التوحيد، 2- باب الإعتقاد في صفات الذات وصفات الأفعال، 3- باب الإعتقاد في التكليف، 4- باب الإعتقاد في أفعال العباد، 5- باب الإعتقاد في نفي الجبر والتفويض، 6- باب الإعتقاد في الإرادة والمشيئة، 7- باب الإعتقاد في القضاء والقدر، 8- باب الإعتقاد في الفطرة والهداية، 9- باب الإعتقاد في البداء (...)، 45- باب الإعتقاد في الحديثين المختلفين..
