فى هذا الكتاب قام كل من المؤلفين بإجراء بحوث ميدانية عن صحارى مصر، وتم أختيار بعضها عن واحات صحراء مصر الغربية ليتضمنها هذا الكتاب، واعدين أنه باكورة لسفر كبير يغطي صحارى مصر في جوانبها الجغرافية والمتعددة، وقد يتضمن هذا الكتاب سبع دراسات تعالج الكثير من الخصائص البيئية بواحات الصحراء الغربية فى مصر، تتناول الدراسة الأولى: خصائص البيئة الطبيعية والبشرية لمنخفض واحة سيوة من خلال دراسة الموقع والحدود والمساحة ثم دراسة جيولوجية المنخفض وأشكال السطح الرئيسية به وخصائص المناخ. يلى ذلك دراسة لسكان واحة سيوة وخصائص العمران وموارد المياه والتربة مع دراسة مختصرة للأنشطة الاقتصادية بالواحة. وتتضمن الدراسة الثانية بيئة منخفض الواحات الخارجة. تسير هذه الدراسة بنفس منهجية الدراسة الأولى من خلال معالجة خصائص الموقع والأبعاد وجيولوجية المخفض وأشكال سطح الأرض الرئيسية بها وخصائص المناخ والسكان وأنماط العمران والأنشطة الاقتصادية الرئيسية.
أما الدراسة الثالثة فتضمن تحليل خصائص البيئة الطبيعية والبشرية لمنخفض الواحات الداخلية بنفس منهجية الدراستين الأولى والثانية وتتضمن الدراسة الرابعة تغير العمران فى الواحات البحرية وتحديد مدى توافقه مع البيئة الطبيعية الصحراوية وذلك من خلال تحديد العوامل المؤثرة فى تغير العمران بها وحسن أنماطه الحالية وإعطاء صورة للنمط العمرانى القديم مع تحديد نماذج لأنماط العمران بالواحات البحرية ثم تقيم مدى التوافق البيئى للعمران بهذه الواحة الهامة. أما الدراسة الخامسة وهى بعنوان التنمية الإقليمية للواحات البحرية حتى عام 2020 وتتميز فى تحديد المقومات الطبيعية والبشرية والاقتصادية للتنمية بالواحات البحرية ثم ذكر برامج مقترحة للتنمية بها، وفى الدراسة السادسة والمعنونة (تجربة التوطن السكاني فى واحة الفرافرة فى الفترة 1976-2003) في الهجرة وتحديد الصور التوزيعية للسكان وخصائصهم المختلفة وعلاقاتهم بالسكان فى المراكز العمرانية القديمة وتحديد مستقبل التنمية بالواحة وتحديد مشكلات المجتمع ومقترحات الحلول، وينتهى الكتاب بالدراسة السابعة وهى بعنوان المشكلات البيئية فى الواحات المصرية.
