تفسيرُ الإمام الطبري هو أوَّلُ تفسير - مطبوع - للقرآن الكريم كاملاً، وقد كُتبت تفاسيرُ كاملة قبل تفسير الطبري؛ لكنه لم تُطبع، وبعضُها مفقود، وبعضها مخطوط.
وقد اعتبر العلماء المحققون أبا جعفر محمد بن جرير الطبري إماماً للمؤرخين والمفسرين جميعاً، حيث أملى الإمام الطبري على طلابه تفسيرَه في حوالي ثماني سنوات.
وأُعيدتُ قراءةُ التفسير على الطبري سنة (306هـ) قبل وفاته بأربع سنوات، وكان تفسيرُ الطبري مرجعاً للعلماء بعد ذلك.
وقد أعدُ (تفسيرُ الطبري) موسوعةٌ علمية شاملة، حَوَتْ كُنوزاً رائعة، وفيه من ألوان التفسير المتعدِّدة ما فيه، وقد ظلمَ بعضُهم هذا التفسير كثيراً، عندما جَعلوه تفسيراً بالمأثور فقط، وصنَّفوه في مدرسة (التفسير الأثري).
هو تفسيرٌ بالمأثور وزيادة، وهو يُصَنَّفُ ضمنَ مدرسة (التفسير الأثري النظري) التي تجمعُ بين إيرادِ الأقوال المأثورة، وبين النظرات والإجتهادات والإستنباطات، والتي أبدعَ الطبري فيها إيما الإبداع.
إنَّ (روائع) تفسير الطبري من الأقوال والآراء والإجتهادات والمعارف (مدفونة) تحت رُكامٍ من الروايات والأخبار والأقوال والأسانيد والنقاشات والإستطرادات التي أوردَها الإمامُ الطبري، وفق منهجه في التفسير، الذي التزم فيه ذكْرَ كلِّ ما وصلَه من هذه الأقوال والأخبار والروايات والأساطير والأسانيد، ولو تكررت.
من هنا، سعى الدكتور صلاح الخالدي إلى تهذيب هذا التفسير، حيث حذف هذا الكم الكبير من المعلومات واستبعده، ولم يورد من الأقوال المأثورة إلا بعضاً منها، مما يوضّح ويفسر معنى الآية، ببعض الأسانيد التي حرص الطبري على الإكثار منها وتكرارها، ولم يورد من الأحاديث إلا ما صحَّ منها.
أما (تقرِيبُ) تفسير الطبري، فقد كان ضروريّاً للمسلم المعاصر؛ لأن عبارةَ الطبري في التفسير فيها صعوبة، وفهمُها يحتاجُ أحياناً إلى وقفةٍ طويلة متأنِّية أمامها، من حيث معرفة مراد الطبري من العبارة أو الفقرة، وعودة الضمائر فيها، وربط مفرداتها وجزئياتها، ومن حيث طريقة الطبري (الخاصة) في الصياغة والكتابة والتأليف والتعبير.
لذلك، قام المحقق بإعادة صياغة تفسير الطبري وفقَ أساليبِ الصياغة والعرض المعاصرة.
