عرف العربُ الرحلة منذ العصر الجاهليّ، وكان هدفهم منها التجارة عموماً، ولمّا جاء الإسلام، حثّهم على الرحلة للحجّ أوّلاً، وللعلم ثانياً، فضلاً عن التجارة، وعندما امتدّت الدولة الإسلاميّة في آسيا وأفريقيا وأوروبة، تنوَّعت أسباب الرحلة وأهدافها.
وبدأ التأليف في أدب الرحلة منذ القرن الثالث الهجري، وكانت باكورته سلسلة من الكتب الجغرافيّة اتخذت عنوان "المسالك والممالك"، وكثرت الكتب في أدب الرحلة في تراثنا العربي حتى أنافت عن المئة.
وقد تنوَّعت كتب الرحلات، وخاصَّةً ما دوِّن منها في كتب الجغرافية، بتنوّع أهدافها، فمنها ما اعتنى بأقطار العالم الإسلاميّ، ومنها ما تخصَّص بقطر واحد، ومنها ما جاء كمعاجم جغرافيّة عامّة، ومنها ما ظهر ضمن موسوعات عامة.
ووجدتُ أنّ الكتب التي اهتمت بأدب الرحلة عند العرب قليلة، وهي، على قلَّتها غير متوافرة في الأسواق، فصعب على الطلاب اقتناؤها.
وعليه، جئت بكتابي هذا، علَّني أفيد قرّاء العربية، وطلاّبي بشكل خاصّ في مادّة أدب الرحلة الذي هو من مقرَّراتهم الجامعيّة.
