بالرغم من ان " المنزل" هو جزأ لا يتجزأ من المعايشة اليومية لمعظم الاشخاص، الا انهم عادة ما ينظرون الى مفهوم المنزل على انه شىً مسلم به . ومن خلال هذه المقدمة عن الثقافات المنزلية والتى تتسم بالسلاسة وسهولة الفهم ،تعرض لنا جوانا هولوز الافكار والمناهج السائدة كى توضح سبب اكتساب المنزل لتلك الاهمية القصوى فى حياتنا. ويتناول هذا الكتاب المفاهيم والقيم التى ارتبطت بالمنزل وكيفية تشكلها وتفعيلها عبر مختلف السياقات التاريخية . وبالرغم من ان بعض مفاهيم الثقافة المنزلية قد وضعت " من اجلنا" ، الا ان هذا الكتاب يبين لنا انه من الممكن مناقشة تلك المعانى والمفاهيم ومحاولة تغييرها. فهى توضح كيف تم تغيير ونقل بعض عناصر الحياة المنزلية داخل النطاق العام. ويتحدى ذلك النص الشامل بعض المفاهيم والافكار المرتبطة بالثقافة المنزلية . فهو يتناول كيفية تكوين معانى الحياة المنزلية عبر مجموعة من المجالات والممارسات بدءاً من فن العمارة ،الاعلام الذى يتناول اسلوب الحياة والاعلان مرورا بزخرفة وتزيين المنزل ، وحتى الطهو و مشاهدة التلفزيون .كما يعرض لنا الكتاب ايضا كيف ان الثقافات المنزلية ليست مرتبطة فقط بافكار بعينها عن الهويات الجنسية، ولكنها تختلف ايضا باختلاف الطبقة الاجتماعية ، والعرق والنوع. ان كتاب الثقافات المنزلية بمثابة نص تمهيدى لطلاب الدراسات الثقافية ، الاجتماعية والاعلامية.
