إن كتاب سر الخليقة الذي قد ظهر أيضاً تحت عنوان "كتاب العلل" قد عُزِيَ تأليفه إلى الفيلسوف ابولونيوس من سكان مدينة تيانا (أما اسمه بالعربية فقد عرف بيلينوس أو بليناس) أحد منتسبي المدرسة الفيثاغورية الحديثة والمشتهر كصاحب خوارق وعاش ابولونيوس في القرن الميلادي، إن ما لدينا من مصادر تظهر صورة متنوعة المظاهر بالنسبة لحياته غير العادية فهي تبين أن الآراء عن شخصيته الحقيقية كانت دائماً مختلفة حتى أثناء حياته، فبعض الناس اعتقدوا فيه شخصاً الهيا وآخرون قد اتهموه بالسحر ومصاحبة الجن، أما مبادؤه الفلسفية التي اختصت بمشاكل الأخلاق فيظهر أنهاعفى عليها النسيان بعد موته بوقت قصير، ونحن نعرف عناوين كتبه الحقيقية من خلال قراءتنا لكتب المراجع القديمة، أما الكتب نفسها فقد ضاعت في بضع قرون بعد تأليفها ما عدا بعض الأجزاء التي لم يثبت أنه ألّفها قطعياً.
وأن هذا المؤلف عاش في ذاكرة الأجيال التي يعده كصاحب خوارق عظيم يتمتع بقوى فرق بشريَّة بفضل روايات شعبيَّة واسعة الإنتشار؛ أما هذه الرواية البيزنطية عنه فقد وصلت إلى العرب، الذين رأوا في شخصية ابولونيوس ساحراً وسمّوه "صاحب الطلسمات"، ولقد جاءتنا باسمه عدة رسائل باللغة العربية ومعظم هذه النصوص يبحث في العلوم الخفيَّة كالتنجيم والكيمياء والسحر، وأكثرها مجاميع مقطعات غير منسجمة، وأضخم الكتب المنسوبة إلى بلينوس هو كتابنا هذا "كتاب سر الخليقة" وهو موسوعة في العلوم الطبيعية، ولهذا الكتاب منزلة خاصة بين الكتب المعزّوة لبلينوس لأن المؤلف يصنف فيه تكون العالم وكل ظواهره بأسلوب منظم مطرد.
وقد توزع الكتاب على ستة مقالات جاءت على النحو التالي: مقالة (1) في الخالق والمخلوق، مقالة (2) في الأفلاك والآثار العلوية، مقالة (3) في المعادن، مقالة (4) في النبات، مقالة (5) في الحيوان، مقالة (6) في الإنسان.
