نظراً لشكوى طلاب كلية الطب من عدم وجود مرجع ميسر في الطب النفسي باللغة الإنجليزية يمكنهم الرجوع إليه دون الحاجة إلى الغوص في بطون أمهات كتب الطب النفسي، فقد عزمت على تأليف كتاب مختصر، أجمع فيه ما يجب على الطالب معرفته في هذا التخصص، وذلك بأسلوب مبسط خال من التعقيد العلمي.
وقد بدأت بالفعل في جمع وكتابة مادة ذلك المؤلف، وخلال تلك الفترة وقعت يدي على الطبعة السابعة من كتاب "Lecture Notes On Psychiatry" لمؤلفيه جيمس ويليس وجون ماركس. وفي الحقيقة لقد أعجبني ذلك الكتاب نظراً لبساطة لفظه وشموليته، إضافة إلى صغر حجمه، فرأيت أن أرشد طلابي إليه، وأكتفي به عن التأليف.
ولكن شكوى أولئك الطلاب لم تتوقف، فهم دائماً يشتكون من صعوبة مصطلحات الطب النفسي، ومن عدم قدرتهم على استيعاب مادته مقارنة بغيره من المقررات الدراسية في كلية الطب، وحينما نظرت في ذلك الأمر ملياً وجدت أن السبب الأساسي ربما يكمن في أن هذا الفرع من العلوم يؤدي ثمرته المرجوة لو درسه الطالب بلغته التي نشأ عليها، وذلك لأن هذا العلم يرتبط بالنفس البشرية ومشاعرها وأحاسيسها، ولا يتعامل مع الأمور بمادية بحتة كما هي الحال في العلوم التطبيقية. ولذلك فقد شددت العزم على ترجمة كتاب "Lecture Notes On Psychiatry" ليكون مدخلاً لطالب الطب إلى مقرر الطب النفسي.
ونظراً لأن المثقف العربي بحاجة إلى زيادة وعيه بالأمراض النفسية من مصادرها الأصلية، خصوصاً ونحن نعاني من النظرة السلبية تجاه الطب النفسي، فقد حرصت على استخدام أبسط لفظ وأيسر عبارة ما أمكن، كي يتمكن من الاستفادة من هذا الكتاب أكبر عدد ممكن من المتخصصين وغير المتخصصين، كما حرصت، أيضاً، على تحديث بعض المعلومات، وتصحيح ما وجدته من أخطاء، وإضافة بعض الحواشي التي أرى أنها ربما تيسر على القارئ، بدرجة أكبر، إدراك محتوى هذا الكتاب.
