يتناول هذا الكتاب فترة هامة في تاريخ القارة الأفريقية بشكل عام، وتاريخ الحبشة على نحو خاص، وهو يتميز بالعديد من الجوانب الهامة، إذ اعتمد على العديد من الوثائق الحبشية (باللغات الأمهرية والجعزية) التي تم الكشف عنها مؤخراً، والقيام بمجهود كبير لترجمة هذه الوثائق عن طريق المتخصصين في هذا المجال، فضلاً عن أن فترة الدراسة هي من أهم الفترات في تاريخ الحبشة، نظراً لوجود الإمبراطور زرء يعقوب (Zara Yaqob 873–838هـ/ 1434-1468م) الذي استطاع النهوض بالبلاد في جميع المجالات، والإمبراطور لبنا دنجل (Lebna Dengel 947-964هـ/1541-1508م) الذي تميزت فترته بكثرة الحروب مع المسلمين الذين حاولوا التوغل داخل أرجاء البلاد. على أية حال يمكن القول أنه يوجد إجماع لدى المؤرخين عى أن اسم الحبشة هو الإسم الصحيح لما يطلق عليه حالياً" أثيوبيا" لأنه يشمل مجموعة من السكان ذوي ثقافة محددة تعيش في أرض واحدة ومذهب مسيحي واحد. وبالتالي فهو "أي الحبشة" أكثر انطباقاً على الأرض والشعب سواءً من الناحية الأثنولوجية أو التاريخية أو الجغرافية. وعلى ذلك فمن الخطأ تاريخياً إطلاق إسم أثيوبيا على هذا الجزء الحبشي، فهم ليس لهم صلة بأثيوبيا، لأن الحبشة تنتمي إلى أحباش أكسوم القدماء الذين أشارت المراجع إلى انتمائهم إلى أصل يمني قديم.
