مصنف هذا الكتاب هو الإمام الزاهد "أبو محمد عبد الله بن قدامة" ولد ببلدة جماعيل من أعمال نابلس بفلسطين سنة 541، وتتلمذ على شيوخ دمشق منهم أبو المكارم عبد الواحد بن هلال الأزدي وأبو المعالي عبد الله بن صابر الدمشقي، وعندما تقدم في العمر قام برحلة علمية إلى بغداد، فأقام في بداية أمره مدة يسيرة عند الشيخ عبد القادر الجيلاني بمدرسته ببغداد فقرأ عليه مختصر الخرقي قراءة فهم وتدقيق، ثم ما لبث الشيخ عبد القادر أن توفي فانصرف المدقق إلى شيخ الحنابلة وفقيه العراق ابن المنى فقرأ عليه مذهب الإمام أحمد، ومسائل الخلاف، وعلم الأصول... والظاهرة أنه عاد من بغداد إلى دمشق بطريقة الموصول، فقد أخذ فيها عن خطيبها أبي الفضل.
وفي حجته سنة (574) لقي بمكة إمام الحنابلة "أبا محمد المبارك بن محمد الطباخ" فسمع منه، واستقر الإمام بعد رحلاته هذه في دمشق، مشتغلاً في تصنيف شرحه الكبير (المغني) على مختصر الخرقي.
أما كتابه المقنع فيدخل ضمن أهم كتبه التي صنفها في الأحكام الفقهية حيث تناول فيه فقه الإمام أحمد بن حنبل، وآراءه الفقهية المختلفة مقسماً متنه في كتب عدة منها: كتاب الطهارة، كتابة الصلاة، كتاب الجنائز، كتاب الزكاة... ذاكراً آراء الإمام أحمد بن حنبل خلال ذلك. وبالعودة لمتن هذه الطبعة نجدها قد تمت بالإضافة إلى متن كتاب المقنع على كتاب المطلع على أبواب المقنع للشيخ أبي عبد الله محمد بن أبي الفتح البعلي.
