"سعد الله ونوس" كاتب مسرحي متمرس، كتب للمسرح العربي مسرحيات عظيمة فجرت قضايا سياسية هامة، وهو بطرحه لهذه الموضوعات اتخذ عمله منحى جديد وهو فن الارتجال المسرحي، وبذلك قدم للمسرح العربي المعاصر شكلاً جديداً من أشكال الفن المسرحي الشعبي، "الملك هو الملك" مسرحية عذبه فيها يوظف ونوس أفكاراً قديمة مادتها التراث القديم، ضاماً إياها بشكل حكاية شعبية مادتها مستقاة من إحدى حكايات ألف ليلة وليلة وفيها يروي بلباقة فنية كبيرة قصة ملك عبث برعيته وبأحوالهم، مقرراً في إحدى الليالي اختيار واحد الأفراد وهو تاجر سابق خانه الدهر، وركبته الديون، وتآمر عليه شهبندر التجار، والقاضي والنظام نفسه، فتمنى أن يصبح سلطان البلاد ليشدد قبضته، ولو ليومين على العباد، وهنا تبدأ المسرحية حين ينصب التاجر سلطاناً على أبناء البلاد...
في "الملك هو الملك" درس سياسي واضح، وهو أن تغيير الأفراد لا يغير الأنظمة، وإنما على الأنظمة أن تتغير من قواعدها، حتى تصبح الجسوم، وتلمع الوجوه بالبشر كما كان الناس في سابق الزمان، فالملك مهما تغير يبقى هو الملك يحكمه وجبروته وظلمه.
