يكاد لا يمرُّ يوم دون أن تأتينا أخبار من الشرق الأدنى والأوسط، تحمل أنباءً عن الشيعة، وكان هذا الإتجاه قد بدأ في عام 1978- 1979 مع الثورة التي قادها آية الله الخميني في إيران، ثم تواصل هذا الإتجاه في الثمانينيات مع الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية وأخبار الرهائن هناك، لكي يصل إلى ذروته في صراعات ما بعد حرب العراق، وما نتج عنها من سقوط النظام القائم في العراق وقتذٍ.
إنَّ الإنطباع العام الذي خلًّفته هذه الأحداث في أذهان بعض المراقبين الغربيين حول هذه الحركات كونها تميل، في الأصل، إلى العنف، وأنها متوجهة لإحداث إنقلابات ثورية إسلامية، هي إنطباعات ضالة، ومضلة، والأصح أن ثمة أسباباً في الصراع الحالي يمكن الكشف عن جذورها التاريخية في أن تاريخ هذه الفئة هو - في الغالب - تاريخ أقلية إسلامية معارضة، عانت كثيراً من المطاردة، والتهميش عبر التاريخ.
